Interview with Viet Ha, Junior 3rd Prize

Happy new school year! Our very own new Competition Manager, Kevin Zhang, has interviewed Viet Ha, 3rd prize of our junior category in HIMC 2021- please enjoy!



What instruments do you play, and how long have you played them?

I play both the piano and the violin, but I mainly focus on piano which I’ve been playing for 8 years now. I’ve only been doing violin for 4 years a little before I started middle school.

What are some of your musical accomplishments?

Some of my musical accomplishments are winning 1st place in the International Chopin Youth Competition and getting 2nd place at the Blinn college young pianist competition.

How has COVID-19 affected you in terms of music?

During COVID-19, I wasn’t able to go to piano or violin lessons for almost a year. I wasn’t able to practice as much without any new music to practice.

What made you decide to participate in HIMC 2021?

I decided to participate in HIMC 2021 because it looked like a new type of competition for me because I also got to compete with not only pianists, but also violinists, cellists, etc.

Which piece did you perform and why? What are your thought about it?

I played The Lark by Glinka and I chose that piece because I used to listen to others playing this piece and I thought it sounded nice.

What are the biggest takeaways from your HIMC experience?

Overall, I learned a lot from the experience that I got from competing from HIMC. The main takeaway that I got however, was that I got to listen to all types of different music. It was a new and fun experience for me.

As the 3rd Prize Winner, what do you plan to do with your prize money?

As the 3rd Prize winner, I plan to save my prize money for the future to use it if I ever need it.

What do you love the most about music?

I love that there are all types of different music and that there will never be a point where I would run out of music to play. I love listening to it and love playing it and sharing it with others.

Finally, what piece of advice would you give to younger musicians?

To the younger musicians, I recommend trying never to miss a day of practice if you can, but most importantly, practice if you enjoy music, not just to do competition.
